Company's West Midlands plant will support the launch of new models, including XF Sportbrake
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has announced plans to expand its workforce by 1,100 at its Castle Bromwich plant.
The manufacturing facility will support the launch of new Jaguar models, including the XF Sportbrake.
JLR anticipates that the launch of the new Jaguar models will also support thousands of jobs in the supply chain.
Business secretary Vince Cable said: “This is fantastic news for Castle Bromwich that JLR is creating more than 1,000 jobs to support the production of new models at the plant.
“This expansion is a clear demonstration of JLR's continuing commitment and investment in the UK.”
JLR may struggle, however, to find recruits with the right skills. A survey out this week highlighted the fact that skills shortages are likely to be the most significant barrier to growth in the British automotive industry, which is booming.
The company's chief executive, Dr Ralf Speth, said: “Innovation in design, engineering and technology is at the core of our business and for the UK, this means we will continue to invest in new products, develop new technologies and enhance the skills of our employees.
“These new models will attract new customers to the brand as we look to expand our global reach and further enhance our position in the market.”
The XF, XK and XJ Jaguar models are currently made at Castle Bromwich, with around 80% of vehicles exported to more than 100 markets worldwide.
