Welsh secretary says Toyota Deeside plant is “one of the jewels” in UK's economy
Japanese car giant Toyota has given Wales a boost by creating new jobs at its Deeside plant.
The firm said it planned to create 70 new posts at its engine plant in North Wales.
Welsh secretary David Jones said Toyota was a “glowing example” of collaboration between a global company and the UK.
He said: “Toyota is a world class manufacturing company and the plant in Wales is one of the jewels in our economy.
“The investment and commitment to the area has not only provided sustained economic benefits and employment opportunities, but has resulted in the development of a strong bond between the company and the local community at Deeside.
“The UK government recognises that manufacturing is at the heart of a healthy and balanced UK economy. There is now growing international recognition of our automotive industry and the interest in our national ambition to generate growth in the whole advanced manufacturing sector.”
Richard Kenworthy, Toyota's Deeside plant director, added: “This is great news for the plant and for Wales. Our members at the Deeside engine plant continue to demonstrate they can deliver the superior quality and efficiency that are vital for building our presence in a highly competitive marketplace.”
The Deeside plant has been manufacturing engines since 1992 and currently employs 500 workers.
In 2012 a total of 124,420 engines were produced at the site, for the Burnaston Avensis, Auris and Auris Hybrid vehicles.
