The Jibran Khalid Memorial Speak Out for Engineering Nationals Pakistan 2024, was held on 25 October 2024, at the Executive Lecture Theatre of DHA Suffa University, showcasing the brilliance and creativity of Pakistan's young engineers.

As part of the global Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) initiative organised by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Young Members, this competition provided a prestigious platform for participants to refine and exhibit their ability to communicate complex engineering concepts effectively.

This event holds special significance as it honours the legacy of the late Jibran Khalid, whose contributions continue to inspire the engineering community. Sponsored by Pakistan Intermodal Limited, Millat Tractors Limited, and Dawlance, the event emphasised the importance of clear communication in engineering and aligned with SOfE’s global standards, where 90% of the score is based on presentation skills and 10% on technical content.

Event Proceedings and Participants

The competition began with a motivational opening address from Dr. Ahmad Hussain, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering & Applied Sciences at DHA Suffa University. His words set the tone for an inspiring day, encouraging participants to push the boundaries of innovation and communication.

The judging panel included distinguished professionals who brought their expertise to the evaluation process:

  • Augustine G. Gill – Secretary of Zenith Toastmasters Club.
  • Syed Muhammad Ali – CEO & Founder of ALI Engineers and Consultants, and the event’s Chief Guest.
  • Kamran Ahmed – President of Zenith Toastmasters Club.
  • Zubair Ansari – Manager of Mechanical Engineering at HUBCO.

Five exceptional participants, representing leading engineering institutions in Pakistan, presented groundbreaking ideas through 20-minute presentations, followed by 10-minute Q&A sessions:

  1. Bilal Nasim (UET Peshawar): “The Future of Transport” – A compelling vision for sustainable advancements in mobility.
  2. Umm e Aiman Mohadissa (NED University, Karachi): “Dast-e-Baseerat Urdu Braille Learning Device” – A transformative solution for enhancing educational accessibility for visually impaired individuals.
  3. Ahram Mehran (Mehran University): “High Altitude Air Balloon with Solar Power Integration” – An innovative application of renewable energy in atmospheric science.
  4. Imdadullah Memon (Mehran University): “The Use of Hydrogen as a Fuel for Automobiles” – A forward-looking exploration of clean energy technologies for transportation.
  5. Syed Muhammad Waqar (DHA Suffa University): “Reinforcement Learning for UAV Engineering Design” – A technical deep dive into artificial intelligence applications in aerodynamics and unmanned systems.

Each presentation highlighted the participants' ability to merge technical depth with engaging communication, reflecting the core values of SOfE.

Event Highlights and Recognitions

The event ended with the announcement of the winner and runner-up:
  • Winner: Umm e Aiman Mohadissa (NED University) for her impactful presentation on the Dast-e-Baseerat Urdu Braille Learning Device. Her work stood out for its societal relevance and innovative approach.
  • Runner-up: Ahram Mehran (Mehran University) for his innovative High Altitude Air Balloon with Solar Power Integration project.

The Chief Guest, Syed Muhammad Ali, delivered a heartfelt speech lauding the participants for their ingenuity and communication skills. The judges echoed his sentiments, emphasising the importance of bridging technical knowledge with effective storytelling to solve real-world challenges.

Certificates were presented to all participants by Dr. Ahmad Hussain, who commended their efforts in elevating the standards of engineering communication. A special shield was awarded to Syed Muhammad Ali as a token of appreciation for his contributions as Chief Guest. Additionally, Syed Faryar Zaidi, Chair of the IMechE DSU Student Chapter, presented gifts to the judges and distinguished guests, acknowledging their support in making the event a success.
