Engineers assess aerodynamics of new, range-expanding fuel tanks

BAE Systems has released images of the Eurofighter Typhoon fitted with range-expanding conformal fuel tanks, an improvement to the third tranche of the fighter jets as it undergoes wind tunnel tests.

Engineers at the BAE Systems site in Warton, Lancashire, are using the high speed wind tunnel tests to assess the new aerodynamic characteristics of the aircraft when the new fuel tanks are fitted to the fuselage. “This testing will help to accelerate the clearance process for such tanks to be integrated on to Typhoon, offering increased range and flexibility to the aircraft,” the company said.

As well as extending range, the conformal fuel tanks would also free-up space under the wings of the aircraft for additional or new weaponry.

The tests use a geometrically perfect 1/12th scale model.

The Eurofighter Typhoon entered service at the end of 2003 and more than 400 aircraft have been delivered to six nations: Germany, UK , Italy, Spain, Austria and Saudi Arabia. The Typhoon is the largest military procurement programme in Europe.
