Formula Student Team

MAHLE Powertrain continues to see the importance of Formula Student in developing new engineering talent. In 2018, we increased the numbers of teams sponsored and had a much larger presence during the competition, which saw record numbers of visitors coming to enquire about future opportunities with MAHLE.

During 2018 MAHLE Powertrain Northampton, had the grand opening of its Real Driving Emission Centre the first of its kind in Europe. The new building comprises a state of the art vehicle emissions testing facility with transient altitude and climatic capability. Vehicles can be tested on the 4 Wheel Drive chassis dynamometer under widely variable altitude, temperature and humidity conditions. The chamber is fitted with comprehensive exhaust emissions testing equipment to satisfy all requirements of all upcoming emission legislative drive cycles, including WLTC, Japanese and American drive cycles. MAHLE are excited by this new facility for the future development of Powertrains and the increased visibility with our global clients.

2019’s competition is well under way for all our sponsored teams, and we continue to work closely with them in support of their developing vehicles. As part of our relationship with the University teams, they also support our activities with local STEM Events, such as The Big Bang Northants at Silverstone. The event is designed to encourage and inspire young people considering education and career routes in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

On the 27th February students were able to take part in our STEM activity, the MAHLE Raceway Challenge and win prizes. We had a mix of volunteers supporting our stand including our Apprentices, Undergraduates and Graduates.

The event attracted nearly 3,000 young pupils and Team Bath Racing electric also supported our stand with their 2017 Formula Student vehicle and VR kit. Students were able to experience 3 generations of their Formula Student car through virtual reality, which generated high interest.
