Martyn E Thomas: Obituary

John W. Middleton C.Eng FIMechE

Mr. Martyn E. Thomas C.Eng FIMechE MBE, sadly passed away on Saturday 2 May 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

Martyn was very well known within the pumping industry and had promoted and supported the Institution over a long period of time; both financially in seminars and conferences, but also giving speeches and promoting the engineering profession.

Martyn started his career as an apprentice with Mather and Platt Pumps and went on to work as Chief Test Engineer before moving to sales and eventually becoming Sales Director.

In 1986, Martyn moved to Sulzer and became managing director of Sulzer Pumps Leeds. At that time Sulzer focused on serving mainly domestic markets for power and water. Martyn changed the strategy and product offerings towards oil and gas; the company became a key player and major supplier in the international market for challenging high energy pumping applications.

Martyn was well aware that the most important asset of any company are the employees; and he introduced a significant culture change in the organisation by bringing all employees to single status with pensions, sick pay etc.

In 1990, Martyn was appointed as President of Sulzer Pumps Energy Division Europe adding responsibility for businesses in France, Holland, Spain and Germany to his existing portfolio of the Middle East and Africa.

During his time at Sulzer, Martyn also served as President of Europump, BPMA and the Engineering Employers' Federation for Yorkshire and Humberside.

In 1997 Martyn received the MBE from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth for services to the engineering industry.

Martyn retired from Sulzer Pumps in 2002 to start a new career as a business consultant, helping a number of companies in the UK and Middle East  to develop successful businesses aligned with the pumping and rotating equipment service industry.

Martyn leaves his wife Joan, to whom he was married for 52 years; and their two daughters Clair and Helen.
