Institution members can benefit from a new partnership with the BSI that gives them a 15% discount on British Standards.
The British Standards Institution (BSI) develops UK national standards that promote and share best practice. The Institution recognises these standards are essential tools for many engineers. To make it easier, and cheaper, for Institution members to access the standards, the Institution has recently partnered with the BSI to create a new BSI/Institution website. The website allows members to search across the full BSI catalogue of more than 30,000 current standards and order hardcopy standards at an exclusive 15% members’ discount. The site contains details of all the current British Standards: everything from BS PD5500, the specification for unfired fusion welded pressure vessels, to BS ISO 9001 quality management systems. Users can find a list of standards on any topic required, either by keyword searches, or by number. The Institution's Manager of the Information and Library Service, Sarah Rogers, said: “We know from library requests how crucial standards are to our members. “Unfortunately, for commercial reasons, standards are not something BSI can license for the virtual library. "Although we do hold a small collection of key standards available for postal loan to members, and we can obtain them from the British Library and other libraries, often members need their own copy and this new service allows them to purchase a hard copy at a discount.” Members can order standards online using a credit card and will receive the hardcopy standard from the BSI within five days (if they are in the UK) or 10 days (if they are outside the UK).
Members will need to log in to search and order standards from the BSI's catalogue.
If members have a query about this service, they can contact the BSI on Tel: 0845 086 9001 (Menu Option 3), or the Information and Library Service on Tel: +44 (0) 20 7973 1274 or email: library@imeche.org. Find out more about how to order BSI Standards through the Institution.
