Message from the Trustee Board - Interim CEO announced

Trustee Board

Dr Colin Brown
Dr Colin Brown

Following recent changes at our Institution I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Colin Brown as our interim CEO starting on Monday 16 July. His appointment is for a minimum of six months. Colin’s first tasks will be to support the important special Council meeting on 1 August and to help the finance and governance reviews already committed to by Trustees. He will ensure that we achieve our 2018 Business Plan goals and lead on creating a 2019 Business Plan in collaboration with the membership.

Colin is a Fellow of our Institution and known to many of you from his previous role as our Engineering Director. I am delighted that we can call on his expertise and detailed knowledge of our operations at this time to help establish the consensus we need to move forward.

Colin himself has commented that “Whilst the last few months have seen some of our active membership concerned over our operations, they have reminded us of the passion and commitment on tap to be harnessed for the Institution to “improve the world through engineering”. I look forward to working closely with as many members as possible to ensure that what we put together, for our ambitions for 2019 and beyond, has the enthusiastic support needed to make it a success.”

Ian Joesbury
Deputy Chair of Trustees

Colin Brown has a degree and PhD from Cambridge University, specialising in fatigue crack growth in titanium alloys. He has worked for Rolls-Royce, BP, Federal Mogul and The Welding Institute. Most recently, he runs his own company, Five Tribes Ltd, specialising in strategic thinking around the supply of engineering skills in the UK with a particular focus on diversity and inclusion as response to the chronic shortfall. He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the IMechE, and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials Minerals and Mining. He is also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Engineers and a Freeman of the City of London. He is married and lives in Cambridge.
