Aircraft maintenance provider Monarch Aircraft Engineering has opened a 110,000 sq ft state-of-the art facility at the Birmingham airport.
Monarch said that 150 roles have been created at the new hangar which will continue to support local jobs and enable the company to expand and service a greater share of the growing aircraft maintenance market, both in the UK and Europe.
Monarch's executive chairman, Iain Rawlinson, said: “This multi-million pound investment at Birmingham Airport is not only generating jobs, but will also attract more international and domestic customers, benefitting both the region and the UK economy as a whole.”
Paul Kehoe, chief executive of Birmingham Airport, said“This facility creates job opportunities for skilled engineers and young people looking to start a career in aircraft maintenance. We look forward to welcoming the arrival of new aircraft and airlines flying into Birmingham specifically to benefit from this world class facility.”
The facility will also support the firm's apprenticeship scheme which has been running for over 40 years. The firm says the scheme, which has trained over 700 apprentices since its inception, provides an essential pipeline of skilled aircraft engineers, both for Monarch and the wider industry.
The hangar will contain component-repair and back shops and it will be able to accommodate almost every aircraft type in its two bays, with sufficient capacity for wide body aircraft including the Boeing 777, 747 and Airbus A350.
Monarch Aircraft Engineering is based in the UK as part of the Monarch Group and provides base maintenance, line maintenance, engineering and technical support, component and full material support, aircraft engine services and technical training.
