Engineering consultancy Mott MacDonald has appointed Richard Waite as its director of new nuclear generation.

Waite will be responsible for developing the consultancy’s business portfolio in the nuclear generation market by growing its client base and delivering major projects both in the UK and abroad.

He spent 18 years working across the design, licensing, procurement, construction and commissioning of the UK nuclear fleet and has full lifecycle involvement of the Sizewell B pressurised water reactor. This included seven years on site prior to commercial operation and culminated as director of projects for Nuclear Electric.

Waite also spent seven years in the defence industry with BAE Systems and its predecessors in a variety of senior programme delivery and leadership positions in the sea and land sectors.

His more recent experience includes five years at the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority as director for engineering, strategy and technology, and programme delivery, as well as chief operating officer and acting chief executive officer roles.

Following this, Waite joined CH2M as commercial nuclear director where he focused on the UAE’s Barakah nuclear power plant, Polska Grupa Energetyczna and UK new nuclear programmes. He subsequently joined Energy Solutions (ES) Europe as president, where he was responsible for the NDA Magnox programme and the ES consultancy and contracting business for four years.

Prior to joining Mott MacDonald, he held a senior leadership position with The Canadian Nuclear Energy Alliance for the Canadian Chalk River Programme.

Peter Black, Mott MacDonald’s managing director for power, said: “Richard’s in-depth knowledge of project management and delivery, commercial awareness and technical ability will make him a great asset to our new nuclear generation initiative.

His extensive contacts and networks in the nuclear sector will help raise our profile, win more work and attract high calibre staff,” Black added.
