Institution News Team
The Institution has been working with CREATE Education and MakerClub on developing a brand new education STEM toolkit exclusively for Members.
The toolkits are available to all Members who are STEM ambassadors free of charge for outreach activities in schools. Designed for a class of up to 30 children, the toolkit includes numerous reusable craft materials for six different engineering challenges and a supporting booklet for ambassadors. The supporting booklet provides instructions on each activity and how to run the workshops, along with teacher notes and how the activities link to the curriculum. The activities encourage students to work together in groups using an accompanying worksheet as they face each challenge. The reusable materials in the toolkits are ideal for Members who carry out education outreach activities regularly, allowing for minimal waste and a readily available resource for when volunteering opportunities arise. Steve Smith CEng MIMechE recently trialled the STEM toolkit and said: ‘The kit is great as it can be used multiple times with a complete selection of activities to suit a range of ages. It provides an adaptable resource for engineers and students to explore a number of engineering principles with opportunities to extend the activities to the full potential of the students. The careers guide is very comprehensive and gives a wide range of options and advice for older students and their parents. Along with the Tomorrow’s Engineers resources we’re able to show that not all engineers are mechanics and that there are many varied avenues to study and practice engineering.’ Included in the toolkit are useful careers materials for students, including our Making it as a Mechanical Engineer booklet and various Tomorrow’s Engineers careers resources.
