Tom Owen, IMechE visits the campus

On  Sunday 1 October 2017, Tom Owen, IMechE's International Business Development Manager visited the HWUDC  to speak to current students about the benefits of IMechE membership, IMechE activities and to answer any other questions they had about IMechE.

Topics covered included: 

  • Social recognition
  • Upcoming engineering events
  • Virtual library
  • Future progression into EngTech, IEng,  CEng and  FIMechE.

Tom also encouraged the students to take part in the IMechE's Speak Out for Engineering challenge, which takes place every year, emphasising that the event is a great opportunity to develop skills in verbal and visual communication by explaining technical mechanical engineering related subjects. 

While on the campus, Tom also had a meet and greet with the current IMechE Student chapter, during which he took the opportunity to discuss future plans the committee had for the forthcoming year.

Fluid Codes visit Heriot-Watt University, Dubai 

To increase understanding around the possibilities presented by ANSYS engineering software, Fluid Codes, the authorised channel partner for ANSYS software in the Middle East, was invited by the Institution’s student chapter to conduct a seminar at Heriot-Watt University Dubai, on Wednesday 11 October.

Jose Ramon Rodriguez, Fluid Codes Technical Manager, began with a brief introduction to the company and their capabilities. He moved on the different types of analysis that can be conducted with the available programs. Examples included structural mechanics, electromagnetics and fluid mechanics; further information on which is included in Fluid Codes free student training materials.

During his presentation, Jose also covered:

  • An introduction on how to setup an FEA simulation
  • The Importance of knowing certain points before starting
  • How to work around non linearities in structures
  • Dynamic structural analysis
  • Fatigue analysis
  • Thermal analysis
  • An introduction to CFD
  • Defining modelling goals
  • How to run a CFD analysis
  • Meshing fundamentals.
