It is with great regret that we announce the death of Denis Filer CBE TD FREng FIMechE who was 115th President of our Institution in 2000. Denis passed away at home, peacefully on 2 May 2022 at the age of 89.
Denis was educated at Manchester Central Grammar School and studied for a BSc in Mechanical Engineering at Manchester University, graduating in 1953. Following his graduation, Filer was commissioned in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), where he completed his National Service. He retained an involvement through the Territorial Army, eventually becoming Honorary Colonel REME TA. He spent 32 years of his career with ICI, retiring in 1988, having spent seven years as Director of Engineering. The same year, he took up the position of Director General of the Engineering Council, a role he held until 1994.
Denis joined the Worshipful Company of Engineers in April 1989, advanced to the Livery in January 1990 and joined the Court in 1995, continuing to be an active member of the Company until 2018. He was awarded a CBE in the 1992 New Year’s Honours List to recognise his contribution to the engineering industry.
Denis is survived by his wife Pamela and their three children Fiona, Katherine and Nigel.
