Rooftop solar system delivers 60% more electricity

The Austrian-designed Smartflower takes inspiration from sunflowers

A 3.2kW solar array system called Smartflower, which delivers up to 60% more electricity than traditional rooftop systems, has been launched in the UK.

Designed and made in Austria, the Smartflower takes inspiration from sunflowers. The system automatically unfolds its 18m2 of solar ‘petals’ to form a circle and tracks the sun during the day at an optimal 90° angle, closing again at night. This provides buildings with usable energy for a longer peak phase than traditional solar panels.

Green Mole, the environmental arm of Liverpool drilling company Mole Group, has secured UK distribution rights for the technology. David Furlong, managing director of Mole Group, said: “On average the Smartflower supplies 60% more energy than the largest 16-panel domestic system. Due to its solar tracking it supplies electricity from sunrise to sunset, delivering 40% more efficiency.”

The Smartflower produces between 3,400 and 6,200kWh a year – the average electricity consumption of a household in Europe is 4,000kWh/year.

The plug-and-play system can begin generating usable electricity in one hour. Add-ons include up to 13kW battery storage and a 22kW output to charge electric vehicles.

To prevent damage, on-board sensors monitor wind speed. If winds reach 54km/h the Smartflower will retract its petals, and unfold when the wind drops. Opening and closing the petals also automatically removes dust, which can reduce electricity production.

Smartflower sold more than 900 units in Europe last year and is expecting 3,000 sales this year. A single Smartflower, including installation, costs from £12,500 to £19,500 for the largest 13.8kW storage system.
