Institution news
The inspiring exhibitions proved to be the perfect setting for attendees to converse about the future of engineering, all while marveling at the engineering feats that helped shape the world as we know it.
The evening kicked off with drinks, canapés and inspired conversation within the 'Exploring Space' exhibition. Guests were then invited to proceed into the ‘Making of the Modern World Exhibition’ to take their seats for dinner amongst the exhibits.
It was in these stunning settings that IMechE President, Carolyn Griffiths, welcomed all in attendance and wished them an enjoyable evening. Thanking Jaguar Land Rover and the University of Warwick for their sponsorship, she then highlighted the important work of the evening’s nominated charity, the Institution’s own Support Network. Carolyn gave an update on her presidential visits, the notable achievements for both the industry and the Institution over the last year, of which we should all be proud to be a part of.
IMechE CEO Stephen Tetlow followed, taking the stage to announce the winners of the 2017 Prestige Awards. Given each year, these honour the hard work of many engineers across the year. In 2017, the winners are:
Stephen congratulated all of the winners before introducing Nick Rogers of Jaguar Land Rover, sponsor of the Institution’s 2017 Vision Awards. Nick had the pleasure of announcing this year’s winners and inviting them to the stage. The awards recognise those whose personal achievements in engineering have provided an invaluable contribution towards inspiring the engineers of the future.

Congratulations to all our award winners and keep up the good work that got you the recognition you deserve.
Once the awards were all handed out, and a delicious three-course dinner finished, attention moved to the after dinner speakers, beginning with Toby Peyton-Jones, HR Director at Siemens UK. Toby gave an impassioned talk on what we should be doing to encourage future generations of engineers. How his career in engineering developed and what the next steps for the industry are in developing the next generation of professional engineers including his role at the Institute for Apprenticeships.
Mark Stevenson, entrepreneur, author, broadcaster and expert on global trends followed Toby with a speech on the future trends of engineering. There was plenty of food for thought in both speeches and they certainly inspired some lively debates among the audience.
With a great new venue, inspirational presentations and a reminder of the good work being done through our amazing award winners, the night was a huge success. We would like to thank everyone in attendance for helping to make it a memorable evening.
