Engineering’s role in the creation of the torch was mentioned only once in the One Show on BBC
I normally stand well back from the debate on the misuse of “engineer” but yesterday’s One Show on BBC recording the arrival of the Olympic flame was a step too far.
During the four and half minute item on the science of flames, including an illustration of the torch meeting its design criterion of remaining alight in 35mph winds, engineering’s role in the creation of the torch was mentioned only once in the summarising comment at the end of the item. The engineer who designed the burner was only described as a technical manager.
Later in the programme I found out what engineers really do. Describing the aircraft carrying the flame Sophie Raworth said “It took engineers nine whole days to paint this plane gold, white and four shades of yellow”
