IMechE Student chapter at NIET Greater Noida, New Delhi , organised a webinar with Ten News TV channel on 9 August 2020, entitled “Atamnirbhar Bharat efforts and IMechE contributions to society". Four Fellows of IMechE India Branch spoke at the event.
Dr. Praveen Pachauri, Director Projects NIET introduced the speakers. Ravi S. Kochak, Vice Chairman Southern Asia Region, spoke on recent contributions by IMechE engineers in India to make the country self-reliant in the manufacturing sector. Some examples of railway rolling stock developed indigenously were described including development of,
- ISO container flat wagon
- 45 feet domestic container flat wagon
- metre gauge container flat wagon
- six-axle special wagon for defence equipment
- the design of an air-conditioned double-decker coach.
Virtual prototyping was used for all these developments.
Mr Pradeep Agarwal, Chairman Railway Division, India Technical Centre spoke about development of BOXN wagon design, testing of crashworthy coach in India, design of special carrier for Agni missiles for Defence, wherein 70% content was developed inside India..
Mr Lalit Chandra Trivedi, Vice Chairman Railway Division India Technical Centre and also the Vice Chair of India Branch spoke about development at Intergral coach factory, Chennai of Vande Bharat railway coaches, fit for 200 kmph speed. He also spoke about improving the environment by transporting fly-ash from Thermal Power plants to cement factories in India and also export of fly-ash to USA.
Mr Amit Ramteke, Secretary Railway Division India Centre and presently working with GE in India, spoke about setting up of a factory in Bihar India by GE, under PPP route, to manufacture and supply one thousand locomotives to Indian Railways, out of which 117 have already been delivered, despite the ongoing pandemic. These locos are fuel efficient and emission compliant as per environment laws in India.
Mr Kochak thereafter spoke about the contributions of IMechE to society and also explained the benefits of IMechE membership, including obtaining Chartered Engineer status, and encouraged young engineers and engineering students to become members of IMechE.
The event received very good response; viewership was 331 on YouTube and 1435 on LinkedIn, including 60 members of IMechE and about 250 Affiliate students of IMechE who viewed the webinar.
The anchor, Dr Pachauri thanked TEN News TV channel and all the above Fellow speakers of IMechE for participating in the webinar, which was of national Interest for a self-reliant India.
