Scottish project said to be the largest of its type in the UK
Siemens has been awarded a contract to design, manufacture and install a SST 800 steam turbine for what it said was the largest biomass-fired combined heat and power plant ever to be developed in Britain.
The plant will supply Fife-based paper manufacturer Tullis Russell. Siemens received the order from Aker Solutions, the engineering, procurement and construction contractor to utility RWE Npower Renewables on the project.
When fully operational, the turbine will be fuelled with 400,000 tonnes of wood and waste. It will have an installed capacity of 50MW.
The new plant will replace an existing coal-fired facility. Steve Wildman, project director and general manager for Siemens Oil and Gas UK, said: “We are delighted to be working with Aker Solutions to deliver to RWE Npower Renewables this important and high-profile project.
“At Siemens we believe that the market for renewable sources of energy will experience huge growth in the next few years.”
The project commenced in March and is scheduled to come on line in 2012.
