Griffin project could power up to 80,000 homes
Siemens is to supply 68 wind turbines for the Griffin onshore windpower farm in Scotland.
The Griffin wind power farm is located approximately 19 miles north-west of Perth in the Scottish Highlands. The windfarm will be rated at 156MW upon its completion in 2012, and is expected to generate enough power to supply over 80,000 homes at full capacity. Siemens has received an order from SSE Renewables (SSER) for the supply of 68 wind turbines with a capacity of 2.3MW each.
The Griffin windfarm deal includes the delivery, installation, and commissioning of 68 of the Siemens turbines. Of the total, 61 will have a 101m rotor and the remaining seven a 93m rotor. Siemens will also provide services for turbine operation and maintenance for an initial period of five years.
In autumn last year, Siemens and SSER signed a contract for the supply of wind turbines for SSER’s 350MW Clyde project in Scotland. This project is planned for commissioning in 2012. “This follow-up order for the Griffin windfarm project from SSER underlines our leading position in the wind power market,” said Jens-Peter Saul, chief executive of Siemens Wind Power. “Furthermore, the Griffin wind power farm will yield significant benefits for Scotland in terms of jobs and local value creation." The project will provide over 100 jobs during the construction phase.
Siemens is also engaged in skills and training to support the development of the wind power sector in Scotland and throughout the UK. Earlier this year the company announced its involvement with Carnegie College, Rosyth as part of the first pilot wind turbine service technician apprenticeship programme. This is designed to provide the renewable energy industry with the skilled workers who are crucial to the sector’s skills requirements, Siemens said.
