Engineering students preparing for this year's Railway Challenge discussed their vehicle with the Yorkshire-born actor.

During an extensive visit to the University of Huddersfield Sir Patrick, who is the university’s Emeritus Chancellor, also visited the Institute of Railway Research. His attendance follows a recent visit to the university’s engineering facilities by President of the Institution, Jon Hilton.

Sir Patrick, famous for his Star Trek and X-Men roles, was shown some of the latest research being carried out by scientists and technologists. He revealed that he is passionate about cars, including a fascination in the potential of hybrid vehicles and electric power, and engaged engineering students in conversation about the ways they are harnessing hybrid technology.

The first stop on his busy itinerary was the Institute of Railway Research. Its director is Professor Simon Iwnicki CEng FIMechE, former chair of the Institution’s Railway Division.

Professor Iwnicki described the work of the IRR and its facilities. He introduced a team of Masters students who are working on Hudrail, a miniature loco that will be entered into this year’s Railway Challenge, organised by the Institution.

After Sir Patrick was shown how Hudrail’s petrol engine could be used to generate and store electricity that could then be used to power the vehicle, he compared this to the hybrid cars he drives and explained how he has mastered the skill of driving his powerful Porsche around Los Angeles without using a drop of petrol.

“As a Yorkshireman, that appeals to me!” he said.

Describing the development of the Hudrail vehicle were Master’s students Daniel Emsley, Jordan Atha, Kieran Parkin and Matt McCarthy.

Sir Patrick also toured the University’s Future Metrology Hub, a £30 million research centre that will help transform UK manufacturing. He met its director and multi-disciplinary, multi-national team of researchers who are harnessing new developments in metrology and miniaturisation to transform the future of UK manufacturing.

During his two-day visit, Sir Patrick had lunch with international students and offered advice in an acting masterclass. He learned about new facilities and research projects and took part in a broad-ranging question-and-answer session with a huge student audience.
