We’re celebrating six outstanding members of the Institution who have been named as winners in this year’s Top 50 Women in Engineering.
The WE50 awards, are organised by the Women’s Engineering Society are now in their fifth year. They aim to showcase female talent in the profession. The 2020 awards, announced on the International Women in Engineering Day 2020 focus on work in sustainability.
Dr Colin Brown, CEO of the Institution explained,
“These winning engineers exemplify the hard-work, determination and significant contributions of all women in the sector. We are very proud to see that this year, alongside other inspiring women, six of our own members have been recognised for their achievements.
"The theme for this year is 'ShapeTheWorld'. We all know that becoming an engineer can lead to improving the world to make it a better environment for all. It is vital we encourage girls and young women to consider such a career so that their ideas and innovations can more easily become reality.”

Dr Kerry Mashford’s career focus has been on improving material and energy efficiency and she received an OBE in 2017 for services to the energy industry. She has been Lead Technologist at InnovateUK, delivering two major research programmes on low impact buildings and Chief Executive of the National Energy Foundation.
Senior Partner, Ove Arup & Partners Ltd
A chartered mechanical engineer and senior energy consultant, Martha Hart helps clients to understand and reduce their energy use, to improve the cost, resilience and security of their energy supplies, and to lower their carbon emissions. She specialises in the development of low carbon energy strategy and infrastructure projects.
Senior Sustainability Engineer, Arup
Adele Carey is a chartered member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. She grew up in an engineering household and spent her childhood designing sledges and treehouses. After achieving a MEng in Design Engineering, she secured a mechanical engineering graduate role at Arup which led to her role as a sustainability specialist.
Associate Professor (Reader), University of Warwick
Dr Claire Lucas has re-developed and re-launched programmes in general, bomedical and systems engineering at Warwick to incorporate holistic systems thinking skills to give students the ability to solve engineering problems in the context of wider systems (people, the environment, infrastructure). She uses the SDGs to demonstrate systemic issues.
Laura Bishop’s interest in climate and the environment began in the 1980s when her engineer Dad introduced the family to recycling before it became mainstream. Her engineering skills and her Dad’s ideals have shaped the ethos of Bishop’s company, which provides design expertise and advice to the renewable heat industry.
Senior Engineer, WSP
A chartered senior mechanical engineer, Kusum Trikha specialises in multi-million-pound low-carbon energy projects. She managed the multi-disciplinary design team for the 10.3 MW electric Birmingham Bio Power Plant renewable project, a biomass gasification plant in the UK, which effectively captures all the carbon dioxide it produces to generate clean electricity.
