Six members competed for the South East Asia Region title

The South East Asia Region (SEAR) SOfE event 2019 was held in Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) on the 12​ October 2019.

The event was led by SEA Regional Young Members Representative Mr. Chua Yaw Long and the SEAR Chair, Prof Dr Ir Ts Vinesh Thiruchelvam, with the active support from the IMechE Malaysia Branch and APU’s IMechE Student Chapter.

The event was managed by APU’s IMechE Student Chapter committee members, with the assistance of their Academic Liaisons Officer (ALO), Dr Arun Seeralan Balakrishnan and Dr Yvette Shaan-Li Susiapan, who also served as the emcee of the event.

Three judges from different industrial backgrounds were invited to assess the participant’s communications skills on effectively conveying technical topics of engineering to someone of non-technical background. The judges were Ms Audrey L Fernando, Mr Brian Cracknell and Dr Rahmat Shazi.

The SEA Regional (SEAR) SOfE 2019 had six participants from the region:

  • Christie Tan Shi Min from Singapore, presented on "Solar City" where she talked about using solar energy to power up homes in Singapore and how it is economically better.
  • Teoh Hao Yang from Malaysia talked about "Safety in Modern Formula One competitions". He spoke about how safety in Formula One has changed over the years and how it has affected the event, the lives of races and the public as well.
  • Aaron Lim Wen Cong from Singapore, talked about the "Physics of Music" and how it can affect human emotions. He also carried out a demonstration live, with some props that he brought with him.
  • Aidan Koh Yong Meng from Brunei talked about Forest fires, and how it has affected the lives of people around the world. He also recommended a solution utilizing mobile devices and heat sensors, as well as water sprinkler systems to help combat the problem.
  • Naim Zafran from Malaysia gave a speech on "The Modern Airline" and how flight has changed over the years and has affected the way people have travelled around the world.
  • Mr. Tang Dun Hao from Brunei gave a speech on "Green Future". He spoke about a conceptual software idea which aims for a greener innovative environment.

The 2019 SEAR SOfE champion was dclared as  Aaron Lim Wen Cong with his title "Physics of Music". The first runner up was also from Singapore - Christie Tan Shi Min, with her topic Solar City

As the winner in this years’ SEAR SOfE event, Mr Aaron will be competing in the upcoming international SOFE competition, representing Southeast Asia Region in 2020.
