137th President of the Institution, Phil Peel, travels to Malaysia to present the 137th Engineering Heritage Award to Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No.5.

Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No.5 (TT5), in Malaysia, has received an Engineering Heritage Award from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in recognition of the local Malaysian state efforts in preserving and maintaining this engineering marvel that was designed and constructed by the British firm F. The 137th Engineering Heritage Award will be presented by the 137th President of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Phil Peel. It is also fitting for Phil to present this award as he is the first international President of the Institution and this is the first international Engineering Heritage Award in Malaysia. The IMechE President was joined by IMechE International Strategy Vice Chair Prof. Ir. Dr Vinesh Thiruchelvam, IMechE Southeast Asia Chair Ir. Dr. Chua Yaw Long, IMechE Malaysia Branch Chair Ir. Dr Aidil Chee Tahir and invited members of the Institution for the unveiling of the plaque onsite on the 23 March 2023.

Commenting on the award, IMechE Southeast Asia Chair, Ir Dr Chua Yaw Long

“The Institution’s Heritage Award for TT5, is the first award for the Southeast Asia region. I am delighted that this award not only recognises this piece of history but also the efforts by the state government in ensuring that we remember and promote past engineering achievements.”
