We are delighted to celebrate 50 years of Bruce Buchan CEng FIMechE being an IMechE member.

In 2022, we celebrated our 175th anniversary and recognised the achievements of IMechE and the contribution of mechanical engineering to society. But this was not the only notable anniversary in 2022; Aberdeen members celebrated the 50th anniversary of EUR ING Bruce Buchan CEng FIMechE CEnv being a member of the Institution!

It’s no secret that IMechE members and volunteers are the ones who make the Institution valuable and with more than 115,000 members in 140 countries, we’re incredibly proud of those who represent us. We love celebrating the achievements of our members and volunteers and it’s so important for us to recognise their hard work.

Matthew Laskaj CEng FIMechE and Scottish Region Committee Chair, spoke with Bruce Buchan and asked what inspired him to become a member and why he is so active as an engineer, Bruce replied: “during a visit to the manager’s office as an apprentice I was emphatically impressed with a framed IMechE membership CEng certificate on the office wall. The evidence and silent witness of being a professional Mechanical Engineer created the inspiration for me to do my best to gain this CEng qualification.”

As a student member of IMechE, Bruce developed a dedicated commitment to gain corporate CEng membership with IMechE. In the exact same way he was inspired to achieve his membership, he has encouraged numerous apprentices to become affiliate members and receive their EngTech, IEng and CEng qualifications by displaying his membership on his office wall!

Bruce was elected as a Fellow of the Institution in February 2007, which, along with having been a member of the IMechE Council, he holds with great satisfaction.

To support the IMechE Aberdeen Area, Bruce was a regular attendee at the local events. This led to him becoming Honorary Secretary for fifteen years and eventually Honorary Chairman for several years. He now continues his role as Past Chair of the Aberdeen Area Committee.

Bruce successfully gained IMechE accreditation for Score (Europe) Ltd, which was the first company qualified to develop the EngTech qualification. Along with this achievement, he secured CEng for all senior engineering staff and IEng for other middle management engineers in the company, to which he says

“It’s encouraging to observe Score and ex-Score engineers communicating and displaying their IMechE credentials on social media verifying their values and commitment to maintaining professional standards to ‘Improving the World through Engineering’.”

Dr Alice Bunn, IMechE CEO, awarded Bruce with a signed certificate along with a 50-year lapel badge to recognise his faithful and dedicated service to IMechE.
