Formula Student Team

An incredible number of hours goes into the creation and running of the event and we could not do it alone. Here's our thanks to all the amazing volunteers who join us each year!

Marshals - the Orange Army! Marshals really do keep the motorsport world running, they’re all volunteers and they support events week in, week out, often on their feet 12 hours a day or more, in all weathers. It’s risky business too!

fs19_unsung_scrutineer
Scrutineers
– these boys and girls in green have the power to make or break your competition, but hey, don’t hate the players, hate the game! Know those rules and you’ll sail through! From the Motor Sport Association (MSA) safety team to the EV specialists, chassis inspectors to tilt table operators these guys are some of the hardest working people involved in FS. And let’s not forget all the document reviews prior to the competition!

Static Event Judges
– team blue is the largest contingent of volunteers with some 150 per day supporting us at Silverstone this year in Engineering Design, Cost & Manufacturing and Business Plan Presentation. Just like the Scrutineers, these guys and girls also have a stack of documents to review prior to the competition, which involved giving up lots of weekends and evenings as they balance their FS duties with their day jobs, families and leisure time.

fs19_unsung_timekeeping
Timekeeping Team
– these eagle eyed guys and gals keep a watchful eye over the Dynamic events, watching out for any penalty incursions. I’m sure they won’t mind if we namecheck one particular individual whose brilliant brain and statistical skills (and athletic ability!) collates and translates all of those lap times and time penalties into a lovely set of final results. Round of applause for Joe Staton and the timekeepers.

fs19_unsung_media
Media volunteers
– our photographers and film crews capture the FS experience for us all so that we can relive it, share it with our friends and families plus provide us with amazing content for our websites, social channels and for showcasing to stakeholders. This team of perfectionists will often work through the night, just to edit the perfect cut in time for the following day’s ceremonies.

Dynamic Team
– under the direction of our Clerks of the Course and Dynamic Events Captain, the team in purple are responsible for setting out the course infrastructure for Acceleration, Skid Pad, Sprint and Endurance to absolute precision using hundreds of hay bales, dozens of type barriers and thousands of cones (dare you to ask someone in purple if they’ve seen any cones at around 8pm, Friday evening). Just like the marshal team, who they work in tandem with, these girls and boys are outside in all weather conditions and work very long hours during competition week.

fs19_unsung_general
General Volunteers
– these are the people who do pretty much ANYTHING and EVERYTHING! They support, coordinate registration and sign on, provide teams with a point of contact at Info Point, assist sponsors and exhibitors with queries, make PA announcements, post results, assist with ceremonies and generally keep Team FS sane! We couldn’t do it without team, so a huge thanks to our GVs!

fs19_unsung_committee
Organising Committee
– many of them are former competitors themselves, so they know exactly what is required to succeed and have a genuine passion for and commitment to the success of Formula Student. Each year, the Committee members dedicate 2200 hours, which they manage on top of their lives outside of FS including day jobs, families and PhD studies, to attend meetings, review document submissions, monitor the FSQD, write and amend rulebooks, design course layouts, assess safety, liaise with sponsors, innovate, strategise and generally work to raise the profile of Formula Student. A huge thank you for their dedication and hard work.

Applications for volunteering for the 2019 competition will open in November 2018, keep an eye open on our social media channels for further updates!
