The Institution's first Guyanese Student Chapter hosts a successful National Engineering Networking Event at the University of Guyana
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers University of Guyana Student Chapter (UG/IMechE), hosted it’s first National Engineering Networking Event on June 27 2015 at the University’s Learning Resource Centre. The event aimed to bring together Mechanical Engineering students and professional engineers from across local industries. The industries represented were from manufacturing, power generation, recycling, heavy duty machinery and mining.
UoG-IMechE National Engineering Networking Event Attendees Mrs. Niebert Blair-Jacobus, IMechE’s local representative chaired the program. The keynote presentation was delivered by Dr. Anthony Green who is currently IMechE America’s Chair. Dr. Green engaged the students and professionals alike of the many benefits of being associated with IMechE. The Presentation struck a chord with Dr. Green who was asked by a student of his background as an engineer, this prompted Dr. Green to motivate the students to actively pursue their studies and at the same time encourage the local industries to partner with the University to foster student development.
Dr Anthony Green, Americas Region Chairman gives a presentation at the National Engineering Networking Event Presentations by the Mechanical Engineering Head of Department Mr. Isidro and Technical Director of MACORP Mr. Oviedo followed. Mr. Isidro informed the gathering of the MoUs signed by the University and local industries which aims to foster development among students of the Mechanical Department. He also spoke of the other plans and projects being undertaken by the department. Mr. Oviedo of MACORP presented on his company’s plan for graduate engineers and urged prospective graduates to enrol in the programme after successful completion of their degree.
Students were allowed to interact with key industry personnel that were represented from this three students were awarded prizes for the “name the most engineers” game. The event was deemed very successful and participants look forward to similar events in the future.
