Why not use UK's existing canal routes to transport water from Scotland to the South East?
John Allison's letter about water shortages in this country and Europe correctly identifies the vast increase in population of this country as one of the important factors (PE April). He also points out that water is available in Scotland which could be transported to the South East.
However the construction of large pipelines over such distances would be prohibitively expensive. Here's a thought: why not use our existing canal system, which covers a large section of this route and could be suitably modified.
