Tell us about your experience on the Student Schemes at Mercedes AMG HPP?
I started my time at HPP on the Mechanical Engineering placement scheme. My first 6 months were spent working within the Performance Applications team, analysing data from the engines. From day one I was diving into race weekend data to solve issues and push the operating envelope of the powertrain. I learned a massive amount about telemetry and data analysis. After Performance, I moved to the ERS Mechanical team. Within this team I developed my mechanical design skills by working on new developments within the ERS module. This exposure to a hybrid system was entirely new to me, and massively valuable to my future career. After University I returned on the Graduate Scheme, working within the newly formed Formula E team. With this new challenge I learned a lot about the design and operation of a fully electric powertrain. Formula E is a fascinating challenge at HPP and I have enjoyed being part of a team all learning more about the championship as we build up to our first ever fully electric race!
What have you learned so far during your time at Mercedes AMG HPP?
At HPP I have been able to progress my skills of mechanical design, drafting, simulation, and data analysis. But one of the most valuable skills I learned on the student schemes was how to work effectively in a professional environment, working to tight deadlines. Managing real responsibilities, coordinating meetings effectively, and communicating engineering changes to others within the business are all key skills that will be valuable as I progress my career. These skills also helped me a lot throughout my final two years of study, and came in very useful during my time in Formula Student.
What have you enjoyed most from your time at Mercedes AMG HPP?
The fast paced work at HPP and the constantly changing powertrain means there is always new work to do. There is always a new design task just around the corner and the variety of work means there’s a constant stream of new challenges to get stuck in to! This has allowed me develop a wide variety of skills and gain knowledge of multiple areas of engineering.
What advice would you give to this year’s FS Students?
Formula Student is a truly unique experience, and I cannot recommend enough getting involved as much as possible with your teams. Not only do you get real practical engineering experience which will boost your career prospects, but you can get exposed to so much more. You can get involved with sponsorship and managing relationships, media and promotion, team management, logistical planning and even race strategies! The breadth of experience you can gain with Formula Student is like no other, so take advantage!
Once again, Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains are excited to be partners of this year's Formula Student event.
