Ahead of our Wind Turbine User Group 2021 event, we caught up with Yu Bi, R&D Engineer II at Ansys.

Yu explained her role and involvement with regards to the conference, critical industry challenges and why it is important for engineers to attend.

Q: Could you briefly explain your role, involvement and experience with regards to this conference?

Yu Bi (YB): I am an R&D Engineer in Ansys involved in floating wind turbine feature development. Before that, I was studying and doing research in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.

Q: What are the main challenges facing the industry at the moment and what are the most common issues you hear from colleagues?

YB: One of the challenges I hear about most is regarding stress analysis of the whole floating wind turbine structure.

Q: What key topics are you excited to speak about?

YB: I am looking forward to speaking about our product’s new feature which can be used to analyse floating wind turbines.

Q: Who else are you most interested in hearing from on the programme, and why?

YB: I am interested in many presentations, specifically ones related to wind farms, robotic and autonomous systems (RAS), and blade operation and maintenance. I hope they will offer me further insights on the direction of the software development in this field.

Q: What is your top tip for engineers working in similar roles to your own?

YB: My top tips would be: 1) Work closely with your team-mates 2) Be willing to face new challenges and 3) Learn and employ new technologies into the development work.

Q: Why is it important for engineers to join this conference?

YB: It is always great to speak/listen/discuss with other engineers. It can broaden our minds and insight, giving us new inspiration. It is the kind of teamwork to make this field/industry more prosperous.
