Read our objectives of implementing Strategic Review findings, maintaining and increasing membership, and clarifying what the government sees as the role of engineering institutions.
The early part of the year saw the demise of the merger talks between us, IEE and IIE. After many months of hopeful discussions this was clearly a disappointment but something as important as this could only succeed if all parties were agreed, and sadly this was not the case. The Trustee Board had a strategic review in Spring 2004, and also took the decision to close our secondary site at Bury St Edmunds. Maintaining and increasing membership has also remained a priority issue, and our prestige events enjoyed significant success.
Implementing Strategic Review findings We will continue to talk to and collaborate with other engineering institutions which share our views of the future. We will continue to espouse high, but appropriate standards, linking Corporate membership directly to EC (UK) requirements for Registration as a professional engineer (CEng or IEng), and enhance staff support for Membership and Learned Society events in the Regions. We will reduce membership application processing time, and will implement a number of other review outputs. Maintaining and increasing membership We are undertaking a campaign to encourage more Incorporated mechanical engineers to join the Institution at Corporate level. Furthermore, the Regional Managers continue to promote the benefits of our successful Company Based Registration scheme, which is generating significant numbers of new members. To address the slow decline in engineers joining the profession, we are examining a proposal to work with a number of organisations in co-ordinating a more community-wide educational programme to encourage future generations into the engineering profession. Clarifying the role of engineering institutions We, together with five other major institutions, have engaged in a dialogue with Lord Sainsbury, Minister responsible for Science, Engineering and Technology. The principal objective of this dialogue is to clarify what Government sees as the role of the institutions, and to ensure that the Minister, and his officials, are fully aware of the contribution which we are capable of making across the whole spectrum of Governmental activities.
