Sheffield City Region Skills Bank has launched a Lean & Six Sigma COVID-19 Recovery Support Programme to help businesses looking for support through the challenges that COVID-19 is presenting.

What IMechE training is supported?

Our focus is on business improvement through Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, so we have selected six courses and two programmes to help you achieve your objectives.

These can be delivered online (live virtual classrooms) or at your premises, depending on your preferred format and COVID-19 restrictions.

Courses:

Introduction to structured problem solving using Lean Sigma - 1 day

Get help deciding which path to take to improve your business. This course provides an overview of the Lean and Six Sigma philosophies, with a practical element to make the subjects come alive.

Who is it for?

Individuals and organisations looking to decide which path to take for business improvement.

Topics covered:

  • Principles of Lean & Six Sigma
  • Applied learning experience of tools, techniques and methodologies learnt

Benefits of attendance:

  • Explore how to deploy the core tools on a simple improvement project
  • Understand the benefits of using a structured approach to problem solving
  • Understand the origins and core concepts of Lean and Sigma

Lean basics - 1 day

Learn to get your projects off the ground with this course, which focuses on two core elements of Lean Thinking: the identification of value and mapping the value stream.

Who is it for?

Individuals and organisations that:

  • Need help getting their lean projects off the ground
  • Are about to embark on their lean journey and who need help in the first stages of their project

Topics covered:

  • Capturing customer intent
  • Business performance measures, data collection & analysis

  • Understand how to map the value stream

Pre-requisite: You must have attended 'Introduction to structured problem solving using Lean Sigma' to attend this course.

Lean Practitioner - 3 days

Deliver real business improvement through having a strong foundation of the practical application of Lean Tools and Techniques.

Who is it for?

Individuals who will be delivering Lean improvement projects.

  • Business performance measures, data collection & analysis
  • Process mapping, value streams, defining value
  • Root cause analysis, cause & effect
  • Foundation tools , standard work, changeovers
  • Visual management, including workplace organisation

  • Understand how the 5 key principles of Lean hang together
  • Understand how to set up and manage a Lean project
  • Explore the suite of Lean Tools and determine when they should be used
  • Gain confidence in the use of selected Lean Tools in a Lean Simulation

Pre-requisite: You must have attended 'Introduction to structured problem solving using Lean Sigma' to attend this course.

Lean Leader - 2 days

Develop the leaders within the business who are accountable for the development of a culture that will support improvement activity.

This course focuses on the important role of the Lean Leader in strategy deployment and the development of a culture that supports improvement activity.

Who is it for?

Individuals who will be guiding and leading the Lean activity within an organisation.

Topics covered:

  • Team formation, leadership and culture
  • Strategy and deployment models
  • Principles to ISO9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 and systematic link to Lean & Six Sigma
  • Sustainability and control

Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) - 1 day

Develop the capability to apply failure mode and effects analysis within the design and process environments within the organisation.

This course explains the core principles behind FMEA, its purpose and its general benefits in product and process design.

Who is it for?

Anyone involved at a working level in the design of products, services and processes; or in the completion or management of FMEAs.

Topics covered:

  • Types of FMEA:  product and process
  • Team set-up and roles
  • Inputs into an FMEA
  • The FMEA templates
  • Failure modes and effects
  • Classifications for severity, occurrence and detection
  • Calculating risk priority numbers
  • Prioritising and planning outputs from an FMEA project

Root cause analysis - 1 day

This course looks at how we know if we are solving the right problem, how we know if we have made the right change to fix it, and what we need to do if we are just stuck for ideas on what to do.

Anyone who needs to lead root cause analysis to support improvement projects.

How does it work?

As a Skills Bank training provider, IMechE Learning and Development can help with co-invested training that directly meets the needs of your business, whether via an existing qualification or industry recognised training programme, or a bespoke programme designed to meet your individual business requirements.

If your business fits the criteria and training for you or your employees would help your business to develop or grow, you will only need to contribute towards 20% of the cost of the training and Skills Bank will contribute 80%.

To be eligible, businesses must have an operational base within the Sheffield City Region.
