Summary

Presented in partnership with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL), this course introduces the underpinning principles and methods of metrology - the science of measurement.

In this Dimensional Measurement Level 1 course, you will be taught how to better interpret technical drawings, make fundamental measurement calculations and implement a measurement strategy in a manufacturing engineering environment.

Ensuring that measurements are specified correctly and the data generated is reliable and well understood is essential in achieving successful engineering outcomes.

This course provides the opportunity for those who study or work in roles that involve dimensional measurement to improve their skills and understand how measurement can influence quality, efficiency and productivity.

Who should attend?

This course is aimed at a broad audience and is suitable for professionals and management in engineering, design, manufacturing or related roles, and those in quality or inspection departments.

About the National Physical Laboratory

This course is developed and certified by the National Physical Laboratory.

Scientists at the NPL (National Physical Laboratory) continually strive to advance the science of measurement. As part of their role setting the standards for measurement in the UK, they have distilled their expertise on measurement good practice into a series of dimensional measurement training courses.

How will I benefit?

After this course you will be able to:

  • Understand worldwide measurement uniformity and the importance and principles of measurement traceability.
  • Understand the importance of using the correct measurement tools for varying applications.
  • Understand how measurements are specified and communicated using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards.
  • Appreciate the differences between the concepts of true value, precision, accuracy and reproducibility and define the concepts of error and uncertainty.
  • Apply good practices to reduce measurement uncertainty.
  • Gain a sense of responsibility for the measurement process and its practical application.
  • Gain hands-on experience of why  measurement is critical to the entire manufacturing engineering process.
  • Give consideration to developing a measurement strategy in the workplace.
