Summary

Understand how to sustainably design, engineer and develop products within a circular economy whilst minimising carbon footprints.

Circular systems are now available as the primary source material and energy resources for new products.

This course examines emerging technologies and business models which are making eco-product design a viable reality.

By highlighting new regulations and levies (current and future), this course ensures that engineers and businesses are designing products that remain viable in a net-zero carbon world.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for:

  • All product and production engineers involved in the process of bringing new products to market.
  • Sustainability managers
  • Supply Chain managers
  • Project managers
  • Concept Development managers

How will I benefit?

After the course you will be able to:

  • Understand how you can engage with circular economy opportunities
  • Better understand CO2e as an engineering unit of measure and how to measure it
  • Engineer products with lower CO2e manufacturing and use footprints
  • Make the case for alternative more sustainable materials and processes
  • Understand the importance of New Product Introduction (NPI) ‘concept’ stage for determining lifetime product environmental impact
Contributes 14 CPD hours

Key topics

  • Become more aware of the interaction of both technical and biospheric circular economies and how engineers are beginning to utilise the opportunities presented.
  • Understand how Scope 1,2,3 emissions are reported in annual accounts
  • Make a sustainability assessment of your existing product life cycle CO2e situation
  • Be able to measure a product’s carbon footprint equivalent (journey to net zero)
  • Identify opportunities presented by sustainable engineering by demonstrating case studies and learning from organisations already taking a more sustainable design approach
  • Understand the concept of “Life Cycle Analysis” (LCA) together with its associated strengths and weaknesses
  • Better understand how by applying Lean Manufacturing principles and Design for Manufacturability “X” guidelines facilities more sustainable future products
  • Understand the importance of the role digitalisation, Internet of Things (IoT) and blockchain upon CO2e authentication and forecasting
  • Show how the use of sustainability engineering concepts aids the triple bottom line and business case viability
