Switchgear: Life after SF6

In 2022, the European Commission proposed that SF6 should be banned from most new electrical equipment by January 2026 for switchgear up to 24kV and for higher voltages by 2031. These impending fluorine gas reduction plans pose an immediate necessity to find alternative means of insulating switchgear.

Summary

In 2022, the European Commission proposed that SF6 should be banned from most new electrical equipment by January 2026 for switchgear up to 24kV and for higher voltages by 2031. These impending fluorine gas reduction plans pose an immediate necessity to find alternative means of insulating switchgear.

This seminar will focalise the process of establishing alternative gas insulators for switchgear and the associated manufacturing and distribution challenges this raises.

Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6) has been used since the 1960s for its stability, availability, and cost efficiency. However, SF6 is a highly potent greenhouse gas and must be replaced in line with the need to reach net zero carbon emission by 2050. Current working to replace SF6 in switchgear suggests that the continued development and use of purified or clean/dry air presents a ready solution. However, dry air can lead to a need for larger components and an increased size of sub-station. This presents challenges on both a manufacture and distribution front.

This seminar will address these challenges by showcasing the work of engineers, manufacturers, and distributors to incorporate alternatives to SF6, the lessons learnt and next steps to be taken to improve current working.

How will I benefit?

Join this seminar to:

  • Receive an update on the state of play in the UK power sector as operators develop their post-SF6 roadmaps
  • Meet and network with key stakeholders representing operators, manufacturers, industry associations and regulators
  • Benefit from case studies on the latest technological developments to replace SF6-intensive GIS
  • Gain an understanding of the challenges facing manufacturers and distribution networks to incorporate alternative gas insulators
  • Benchmark your organisation's readiness to move past SF6 against industry peers, both in the UK and Europe
