Summary

In this geometric dimensioning & tolerancing (GD&T) workshop we present understandable tools your entire team can use.

A concurrent engineering team, equipped with the proper tools, has the ability to shorten time to market, reduce engineering changes and create a robust quality design.

Design decisions should be optimised for quality, cost and delivery at the sketch phase, when an engineering change costs a few pennies (rather than hundreds or thousands of pounds months later).

The drawing is the common thread of the concurrent engineering team. By using these methods, you can base design decisions on fact rather than emotion and past practices.

Who should attend?

This course is suitable if you use GD&T to design, produce and inspect parts: mechanical engineers, designers, managers, production planners, inspectors, machinists and supplier quality personnel.

How will I benefit?

After the course you will be able to:

  • Translate geometric feature control frames into plain English with one clear meaning
  • Explain the major rules found in the ASME Y14.5-2009 standard
  • Explain the tolerance zones for the 14 geometric characteristics
  • Understand the hierarchy of geometric tolerancing
  • Recognise proper application of GD&T
  • Calculate geometric tolerances and boundaries
Contributes 21 CPD hours

Key topics

  • What is GD&T?
  • Datums
  • Datum feature controls
  • Advanced datum concepts
  • Form
  • Orientation
  • Profile
  • Position and symmetry
  • Coaxial features
