This introductory course outlines the metallurgical principles of heat treatment, why heat treatment is carried out and the underlying theory behind heat treatment processes.

This course covers both ferrous and non-ferrous metals, problems that can occur during heat treatment and an introduction to surface hardening of steels by heat treatment processes.

The one day workshop is designed to give an understanding of the benefits of heat treating a range of metals and alloys. Knowledge gained allows delegates to specify and apply the correct heat treatment to a variety of alloys, leading to improved product performance and process efficiency.

This course is suitable for anyone requiring an overall understanding of the principles and practicalities of heat treatment. This includes purchasers and vendors of heat treatment services, design engineers and quality control technicians.

How will I benefit?

    After the course you will be able to:
  • Explain why heat treatment is required for steels, nickel, titanium and aluminium alloys.
  • Appreciate the influence of heat treatment on microstructure and hence on materials properties.
  • Compare and contrast the attributes and control characteristics of electrical resistance, induction, gas and fuel oil fired furnaces.
  • Specify physical test procedures and explain their relevance in a formal quality control environment.
