Summary

Understand the vital role tolerance stack analysis plays in design verification, ensuring the product will function as intended and that all component parts have the appropriate tolerances.

Variations will always be present in any manufactured product, and the accumulation of these small variations can have a devastating effect on a company’s profitability and reputation.

This core skill of Tolerance stack analysis (TSA) is fundamental for design engineers to ensure the successful manufacture of any product and hence customer satisfaction, profit and market share.

Unambiguous TSA builds upon previous correctly applied GD&T. This advanced 2-day course provides designers the skills to guarantee functionality of their products, maximise tolerances, and solve problems.

In addition to +/- tolerances the course covers how to include tolerances of flatness, position, coaxility, symmetry, perpendicularity, parallelism, profile, and runout.

This course has been designed for practitioners with working GD&T knowledge. Enrolment on the programme assumes you are comfortable with the GD&T concepts covered in our Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing course (GD&T): BS 8888 and ISO and ASME GD&T.

Delegates must have completed a minimum of 3 days formal GD&T with any provider and have a good understanding of the subject to undertake this course. If you are unsure, please contact a member of our training team at training@imeche.org.

Who should attend?

Design engineers and those that are involved in the detailed preparation of drawings and specifications, verification and validation manufacturing and quality engineers.

How will I benefit?

After the course you will be able to:

• Demonstrate a clear understanding of the role and purpose of dimensioning and tolerancing in the modern manufacturing environment.
• Produce a non-ambiguous absolute analysis of any tolerance chain (stack-up).
• Create vector diagrams and use vector methods for absolute TSA.

Contributes 14 CPD hours

Key topics

• The course teaches the application of vector methods to calculate absolute worst-case sizes, wall thicknesses, clearances, interferences, steps, protrusions etc. that may exist as a result of the applied geometric dimensions and tolerances.

• Introduces statistical tolerancing.
